With a client roster of Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, one could almost say that bollywood swears by Deepika Mehta, the yoga instructor.
Deepika at 29 exudes a kind of grace that can only come from being beautiful inside. Her successes have however, not come easy.
Her parents gave her complete freedom to grow and right from the start she was bitten by the adventure bug. She was trained as a professional rock climber and trekking up the mountains and organizing camps for tourists was part of her job.
Deepika was in charge of other’s safety in a climb and it was sheer travesty of justice that her own rope snapped and she had suffered grave injuries. She was bed ridden for a year and there were a lot of dark clouds in the mind.
She took comfort in spiritual literature and that triggered in her an interest in yoga.
That discovery helped her to recuperate and since then her faith in yoga has fortified.
She recounts the confusions of those days,” I was looking for something to believe in and in yoga, I found a karmic connection”.
Deepika went to Rishikesh and trained under a number of gurus. She also studied yoga from the famed Shivananda Yoga Kendriya in Kerala.
She practices yoga for over three hours every day, meditates and does pranayama and all those hours of effort shows in her languid movements and easy grace. Deepika vibrates a feeling of cheer and the very soul of health. The daily practice not only takes care of the physical side of health but also makes a person emotionally robust and spiritually strong.
She started training people in her neighbourhood and through word of publicity is today the numero uno in the sprawling health and fitness industry. Deepika does not believe in hiring PR agencies or spending money on advertising one’s wares.
“If the product is good then people would beat a path to my doorstep”. That’s exactly what happened when filmstars came to her for advice.
Today, Bollywood can’t do without her. If you wondered how Aishwarya looked so svelte and chic in Doom- II, then the producers will have to thank Deepika’s handiwork as she was specially summoned to train the actress at the last minute.
Deepika also packages yoga to appeal to today’s generation and her centre looks modern replete with mirrors and piping music. She has combined yoga with other dynamic art forms to make it interesting. Says she,” I am trying to present yoga better to these kids without compromising on the sanctity of the asana”.
For a bedridden woman to becoming a new age fitness guru has been one long journey as she finally concludes: Yoga has taught me to be happy and aware about the real things in life.
